Matavai Bay Matavai Bay is a bay on the north coast of Tahiti, the largest island in the Windward group of French Polynesia. It is in the commune of Mahina, approximately 8 km east of the capital Pape'ete. ==Early European voyages== The bay was visited by European voyages of discovery in the second half of 18th century for wood, water and supplies. As late as 1802, Governor King of New South Wales considered Tahiti "the only island that needs little or no precaution for the safety of those who visit it"〔Governor King to the Duke of Portland, 1 March 1802, Historical Records of Australia, Series 1, Volume 3, Page 432〕
